After the great disappearance, Mark Taylor found himself faced with a second chance to right the wrongs of the past. What he found instead was a city whose familiar streets harboured a deepening darkness, and an obsession bordering on madness.

DISAPPEARANCE makes me give myself a hug for getting into this Indie business.

Zaple has a sweeping, smooth way of crafting descriptive narrative. He is an expert followthrough-er, leading you through paragraphs like a foul-mouthed gondolier. I was continually impressed, many times stopping for a satisfied exhalation before pressing on into the next dark, dark alleyway.

I would have given DISAPPEARANCE 4.5 cauldrons (DLB rating scale), but I found that I tripped on some of the dialogue. I'm confident that most readers would be just fine with it--and indeed I've read reviews in which readers are impressed with its authenticity--but for me it was at times clunky and in need of some developing. It's a minor issue, and Zaple's magnificent scene-setting far outweighed it.

This book is NOT for the prude; be prepared to despise most every character. I have a nagging faith in humanity, which may have contributed to my discomfort with some of the dialogue and despicable goings-on, but the characters that I COULD celebrate were flawed and likable.

I'm hesitant to say that I appreciated Jason and Sarah's chemistry--for fear that I'll be struck by lightning--but Zaple has a handle on this particular vein of obligatory kinship...before it happens. I can't applaud for that, though if I have to read something like that I definitely appreciate it being written remarkably well.

I really liked Olivia. Those of you that were with me for yadragonchaser know that I've been there--pregnant and PISSED. She's steadfast but scared and struggling to not just give in. You can hear it in her wavering anger, and for that I appreciate Zaple's delicate take on this.

Great book. I recommend this for anyone that's willing to hack through a thorny, demon-riddled thicket with a fantastic, raw talent.

Disappearance Trevor James Zaple 9781492264460 Books Reviews

I’m going to be honest upfront. I only fully read half of this book. For the first hundred pages or so I was riveted, and couldn’t put it down, and unfortunately that did not last. To the writer’s credit, I completely believe his characters. They are well rounded, flawed and come off as real people. I had no problem imagining that these people existed and that this is how they would react in a crisis.
They were some of the most defined characters I have read, and I absolutely hate them. I don’t mean that I don’t like reading about them, I just hate them as people. They are wonderfully flawed, they are nuanced, and I would not associate with them if they existed.
I did not stop reading because hate the characters, I applaud the author for creating such a strong emotion in me. I stopped reading because this book has very little in the way of plot movement. This book is at its core a character piece. The plot moves in the very first chapter, and then it’s characterization all the way. For some people that works, not so for me.
Still, the story is not without its flaws. The interludes that do not involve the main characters are confusing as they introduce a side character; have them experience something in a small way, and then the narrative moves on. I could not tell if they were important characters, or simply windows into which the world was more fleshed out. The first ‘interlude’ was especially hard to read, as it was predictable and repetitive. People disappear, and we get to see several people experiencing that in very undramatic ways. Leaving a room to find someone gone, standing at a subway and noticing everyone is gone, driving a cab and suddenly the fare is gone. The story would have been stronger without it.
The thing is I absolutely loved the beginning of the story. The main character contemplating suicide, the outcome, the discovery of the event, and his relationship with his sister, it was all perfect. I was excited to continue to read about this character. However once everyone disappeared he had very little in the way of reaction. He was about to kill himself because he was bored, why did he give up on that? Is he less bored now that there are less people? Does he care enough about his sister not to and just covers it up with violence? Is he just a sociopath? Perhaps this is explored more later on, but I could not muster the interest to find his chapters and continue.
A major selling point is that when the writer is invested in a viewpoint character his voice is strong. I had no trouble believing that Jason was a nerd, or that Mark was an angry but caring almost father, though when the perspectives jumped from character to character with little indication the voice was muddled and off. The prose was at its worst during the interludes where an omniscient narrator appeared and would wax poetic about the fate of the city. I would have preferred to stay with Jason and Mark with their well-defined voice and characterization than pull back and lose that intimacy.
At the end of the day I would have liked to see more plot, less random characters, and a little more realism on the effects that many people disappearing would have. How is electricity still running? How have there not been more problems from sewage, water treatment, or nuclear plants? The world wouldn’t just keep turning if 90% of it disappeared.
It’s an interesting work, a fantastic beginning, but an unfortunately slow to move plot. The writer has real chops, but this book needs a little more editing. I hope to see more polished work from him in the future.
Disappearance is, as the book itself once alludes to, like an atheist rapture version of the apocalypse. There is no societal collapse, but rather an attempt to rebuild. I found Zaple's depiction of this process to be both realistic and enthralling.

There were a few problems. A few of plot devices seemed forced and a couple of characters came off as flat, but they were small in comparison to the great accomplishments made by Disappearance. What is most extraordinary about this book is how it sticks with you when you're finished. It delves deeply into what makes society tick as well as the nature of power, and I found myself thinking about these themes long after putting the book down. Zaple has captured the dichotomy of human nature perfectly, our desire for stability at war with our penchant for chaos.
